This mala is called “Mala of the 8 planets”. The semi-precious gemstones which compose it help the concentration.
Malas are used for Japa, keeping count while chanting or mentally repeating a mantra. In Sanskrit “mala” signifies a “garland” for prayers made of flowers or pearls. Mala crafting is considered to be one of the 64 traditional Indian arts.
This mala is composed of 108 seeds, like the 108 Upanishads, the 108 names
of Vishnu in the Mahabharata. 108, like the Mudras (ritual gestures) in Tantra.
In Buddhism this number represents the 108 trials that Buddha underwent
to attain enlightenment.
